The OnePlus 6T was first released on the 21st of May 2018, in this OnePlus 6T review we will be giving you the rundown on what it has to offer, from price to spec and everything in-between.

OnePlus not long ago released there flagship the ‘OnePlus 6’, which is fantastic and definitely worth checking out.

You could consider the OnePlus 6T a new and improved version of this phone as there are some incremental upgrades but the, for the most part, is the same.

The OnePlus 6T camera is strong and has the capability to turn the most novice photographer into a pro.

Without question the OnePlus 6T is an eye-catching device, with some new features from the previous model such as a bigger battery and an in-screen fingerprint scanner, the attraction is high and the device is in high demand.

OnePlus 6T Review: Design & Display

Much like the previous model the OnePlus 6T design is awesome, it looks great and really feels premium when in your hand.

The body of the device is glass, on both the front and back, which does make it a little slippy and will be a magnet to fingerprint so we definitely recommend a skin or case for the phone.

We would have loved to see a little more colour variety as the only options for this device is Mirror Black or Midnight Black, a little disappointing but both colours look awesome anyway.

One thing you will notice in comparison to the previous OnePlus 6 is the teardrop notch at the top of the phone.

The teardrop notch is super small and OnePlus did a great job at squeezing in the front-facing camera and ambient light sensor, however there is no face ID or dot projector.

The notch can be hidden if it becomes annoying by build-in software in the phone, we found ourselves doing this a lot when gaming on the handset, as it would often be distracting.

Superfast facial recognition is still implemented in the device thanks to its RGB camera, allowing you to unlock your device in an instant.

Around the right-hand side of the phone you will find the power button, which enables you to take up the device by either pressing the button or simply double-tapping the screen.

Just above the power button is the OnePlus slider, allowing you to quickly mute, priority or loud your phone.

You will also find the USB-C port at the bottom of the phone, alongside a speaker and microphone, you won’t find the 3.5mm headphone jack, as this is the first time OnePlus has decided to follow suit and remove the port.

However, you will find a 3.5mm USB-C adapter in the box so you are still able to connect your wired headphones to the device without any problems.

A lot of die-hard OnePlus fans have complained about the removal of the headphone jack but like the majority of manufacturers now, they are pushing wireless headphones more and more.

OnePlus are known for how well they implement customer feedback into their devices, so we can see how this may upset some OnePlus fans.

The display is a huge 6.41-inch AMOLED which is 2340 x 1080 resolution, giving 402 pixels per inch.

This is impressive and really enhances the usability on the phone, especially when watching videos or gaming.

The 19.5:9 aspect ratio means that it is a longer screen, so it actually doesn’t feel too big in your hand due to the phone being almost all display.

We were super impressed with the overall quality of the display; colours are vibrant and really pop, coupled with the large display it makes for an amazing visual experience.

Undoubtedly the feature we were most impressed from is the new fingerprint sensor, so this sensor allows you to unlock the phone simply by placing your finger on the display, just like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

This makes is really convenient to unlock your phone even in the most uncomfortable holding positions and is extremely responsive too.

We found that as soon as we placed our finger on the display the phone would instantly unlock and be ready to use without a moment of hesitation.

A huge benefit of having the fingerprint sensor built into the display is that it does not take up any room at all, meaning you get the most out of the beautiful display and there is no finger-button coordination needed.

The sensor makes the OnePlus 6T extremely secure for storing passwords and online banking, as without your unique fingerprint or knowing the passcode there is no way an intruder could gain access to your phone.

OnePlus 6T Review: Performance

When it comes to the performance of the OnePlus 6t we were extremely impressed, the first thing we loved is that it now starts at 128GB of storage instead of 64GB.

Furthermore, you will notice that there are two options to choose from when it comes to RAM, 6GB or 8GB.

This is good news as it has the exact same starting price as the OnePlus 6, making it a huge, cost-free benefit for anyone in the market for a OnePlus phone.

The phone runs Android 9 Pie right out the box, which is the latest version of Android, coupled with their own overlay, which is called ‘OxygenOS’.

The overlay makes apps look different and even allows custom features that are exclusive to OnePlus, under the hood you will find that the OnePlus 6T is pretty much the same as the previous OnePlus 6 device.

The real upgrades here come from the storage and display. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset is driving the car and it doesn’t half have some horsepower!

We tested the phone out gaming as were extremely impressed, the phone has no lag or stutter at all, we played games like ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Runescape’, which demand high performance and are graphically intense.

That did not stop the OnePlus 6T from delivery exceptional performance and allowing us to play for long periods of time without any hiccups.

The gaming mode on the device was awesome and stops any notifications from disrupting your gameplay.

If you anything like me and love to game on your handset then this is extremely important as you don’t want a friends text to stop your winning streak!

One reason for the OnePlus 6T’s amazing performance is that it has new smart-boost functionality, which essentially analyses the performance and reallocates memory to keep the phone running smoothly at all time, even when under lots of stress.

This features stores the data from the apps that you use most, making them load up quicker when using them next time and the phone remembers that you use the app often.

The speakers on the phone are awesome and really enhance the overall experience of using the device, especially when gaming or watching YouTube, sound is crisp and clear, although that being said this is definitely an area of the phone where OnePlus have decided to cut costs a little.

Seeing as though the OnePlus 6T to buy is around £530 when you compare the performance specification to other devices in the same price bracket, this is a clear winner to most.

Overall the performance of the OnePlus 6T is exceptional is rivals more expensive handsets, the chipset coupled with the amazing display really does give an immersive experience.

Augmented Reality is awesome and is a cool feature to keep you entertained for hours when using the phone.

OnePlus 6T Review: Camera

The OnePlus 6T camera is brilliant, it has a 16MP and 20MP dual rear camera, and a 16MP front-facing selfie camera.

Given the price of the handset, we were pleased with the overall performance on the OnePlus 6t camera; it offers good quality images, just like the previous OnePlus 6t although the software has been slightly improved.

Scene recognition has been improved which is noticeable and will capture slightly more aesthetically pleasing images, perfect for the Instagram lovers out there.

The new ‘Nightscape long exposure mode‘ is pretty cool too, although this is very far away from being like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro night mode.

Don’t get me wrong it is impressive and will capture some stunning images in low light situations, but it could be better.

The HDR will automatically detect when there is a lack of ambient light and draw in as much light as possible to capture the best shot possible.

However the image quality does suffer a lot when zooming in, especially in the low light situations, we found it hard to get a good quality image whilst zoomed in fully and you will also need extremely steady hands.

Thanks to the 16MP front-facing lens you will also get some great selfies, although the HDR does not work as well on this lens but the bokeh mode certainly will.

When it comes to the video performance we had no issues in this department, the phone will shoot up to 4K with great detail and the onboard stabilisation stops the shakiness.

Although the 4K recording is capped at 10 minutes with it gradually getting worse and worse the more you zoom in.

That being said in the right lighting conditions we managed to capture some stunning video footage of our dog leaping over the fence that we loved so much we emailed it over to ourselves to keep forever.

Overall the OnePlus 6t camera is highly impressive and can even compete with the likes of the iPhone XS, Google Pixel 3 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro in different areas. We were able to capture plenty of stunning images alongside great video too.

Given how cheap the OnePlus 6T can be attained on a contract deal we feel the camera aspect really makes this phone exceptional value for money.

OnePlus 6T Review: Battery Life

One of the biggest upgrades from OnePlus 6 is the bigger battery in the phone. Now although the phones are extremely similar in size, OnePlus has done a great job at giving users more juice when using their device.

The battery power has improved from a 3300mAh to 3700mAh, which in the scheme of things is huge!

The OnePlus 6 already had a solid battery and we had no complaints with it in that department, but to see a further upgrade is awesome and you will really see the benefits from going from the OnePlus 6 to the OnePlus 6T.

We found that we were consistently getting around 6 hours of screen on time, you can expect this phone to last you a full day of usage easily, and more depending on how much you are using the phone.

We would have loved to see OnePlus implement wireless charging on the phone as it is a glass design, but they do somewhat make up for it with the extra power and the fast-charging abilities of the phone.

OnePlus 6T Review: Summary

The OnePlus 6T has a beautiful build quality and a fantastic display, alongside some huge specifications.

An improved battery life which can keep you going for a lot longer than the previous OnePlus 6t is attractive, however, if you already own a OnePlus 6 then we would recommend you stick with that as there is not a whole lot to change for.

The OnePlus 6T to buy is a cheaper alternative to some of the more well-known handset providers out their, offering more value for money than the likes of budget Samsung or iPhone devices.
