OPPO isn’t exactly well known here in the UK, however, over in China, this company dominates alongside Huawei, offering cutting edge technology for an affordable price.
The main competitors of this device are the OnePlus 6T, Nokia 8.1 and the Huawei P20 Pro, each offering there own individual features than set the phones apart from the crowd.
Let’s take a closer look at what the Oppo RX17 Pro has to offer…
Oppo RX17 Pro Review: Design & Display
So when it comes to the Oppo RX17 Pro design, it really does look like any other smartphone out there in 2019.
It looks extremely similar to the OnePlus 6T in particular, this is down to both Oppo and OnePlus being owned by the same parent company.
If you are like us, and are based here in the UK, then you may not have heard the name Oppo being thrown around too much.
This is mainly due to the fact that they mainly operate over in China and India, and when we say operate, we mean to dominate, as they are the fifth most popular phone manufacturer over in India!
The Oppo RX17 Pro comes in two different colours; you have the Radiant Mist, and the Emerald Green.
- Water is life. The unique shape of the RX17 Pro’s notch is inspired by a droplet of water captured at the moment before it falls; a brief, transitional state between movement and stillness, where anything is possible. When you turn on the screen, it bursts into life as if infused with the life-giving power of water
- At night, every ray of light is fleeting and precious. The RX17 Pro’s F1. 5/F2. 4 Smart Aperture camera is built to automatically widen in fading light and darkness, letting more light rays in for clearer night scenes. When your surroundings start to brighten, it closes quickly to reduce glare, making every shot effortlessly crisp and clear
- When it comes to selfies, you’re the expert on all the best ways to bring out your natural beauty. That’s why the RX17 Pro’s AI Beauty Camera lets you take control. Featuring face slimming, makeup and six other fully configurable modes as well as a live preview option, the AI Beauty Camera lets you decide what goes into the making of a perfect shot. At the same time, it learns your beauty tricks from the settings you use - so that the more you use your camera, the better it gets at taking photos
- You can unlock your RX17 Pro instantly just by touching the screen thanks to its hidden fingerprint sensor. An ultra-photosensitive sensor under the display ensures crystal-clear fingerprint images
- With an enormous 6GB RAM and Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset, the RX17 Pro unleashes full-speed computing performance and lightning-fast app launch times. Plus, we’ve optimized the system to work seamlessly with Arena of Valor, PUBG:Mobile for your immersive gaming pleasure
Both colour choices look spectacular and we were lucky enough to get our paws on the Emerald Green for this review.
Immediately we noticed how eye-catching the glossy rear is, and because of this, it does a great job at hiding fingerprints and any scuffs you may encounter on the phone.

When light hits the phone it really does looks awesome, and thanks to its curved finish you can be sure that you won’t drop this thing, as it feels extremely grippy when in your hand.
You may be wondering is the Oppo RX17 Pro waterproof?
Well, unfortunately there is no IP rating for this device whatsoever, so the Oppo RX17 Pro is not waterproof, so you really do not want to drop this phone especially around any water.
We love that fact that Oppo actually includes a screen protector that sits on top of the glass, and they even give you a silicone case in the box, so no need to go out and buy one.
Alongside that pre-installed screen protector, the phone is actually coated in Gorilla Glass 6, giving you tons of protection if you happen to have your keys jangling about in the same pocket as this phone.
Now just like most phones in 2019, the Oppo RX17 Pro does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack, and they do not include an adapter in the box.
The Oppo RX17 Pro design is pretty slick, it has an awesome triple camera set up when you flip the phone over, and has the OPPO branding in the centre of the device.
This is pretty much the only difference between this phone and the OnePlus 6T.
The Oppo RX17 Pro weighs in at 183g, this is a nice weight for a smartphone and ensures that the phone feels premium in your hand.
All in all, we think the design of this phone is clean, and we love the colour options, as they both look great, especially when in direct sunlight.
Moving on to the Oppo RX17 Pro display, the 6.4-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 looks great.
With an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a pixel density of 402ppi, you can be sure that this phone delivers a great viewing experience.
The full HD resolution ensures that visuals are extremely crispy, blacks are deep and colours are bright and vivid, making it a great phone for those that love to watch videos on the likes of Netflix and YouTube.
One thing we did notice about the Oppo RX17 Pro display is that colours are a little oversaturated, and we would have loved to have seen a ‘natural mode’ to tone things down a little.
The phone does have the option to tweak the colour temperature however, meaning if you feel that the colours are a little warm you can easily cool it down in the settings.
The teardrop notch is something we have come to love here at Device Dictionary, as it ensures that we get the maximum real estate on display to ensure a solid media experience.
Again this is extremely similar to the display seen on the OnePlus 6T, but that is certainly not a bad thing.
The Oppo RX17 Pro display does feature an in-screen fingerprint sensor, this works great and is perfect for keeping your phone nice and secure, ideal for things like online banking and saving credit card details on your device.
The display does have a blue light filter, which will protect your eyelashes from singing off should you have the brightness cranked up high and check your phone in the middle of the night.
Oppo RX17 Pro Review: Performance
The performance aspect of the Oppo RX17 Pro is not great; this is mainly down to the fact that the phone uses a far weaker process than is available now in 2019.
The Oppo RX17 Pro uses the Snapdragon 710 processor, which is a lot weaker than the Snapdragon 845 that we expected to see in this smartphone.
This makes it a questionable purchase if you are planning on using the device for gaming purposes, as you can purchase the OnePlus 6T which has the Snapdragon 845 for around the same price as this phone.
Thankfully the Oppo RX17 Pro is backed by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 256GB with the use of a microSD card.
We tried the phone out on some of our favourite games, and found that it ran pretty smoothly, however we did find that the phone would sometimes skip a beat when flicking between apps, not ideal when you consider the price tag of this phone.
Games like PUBG run fine, and the phone handles the game well even in max graphics, that being said we noticed some lag after half an hour of use.
Again if you’re looking for a gaming handset then we definitely would recommend checking out some of our other smartphone reviews as there is much better value for money choices out there for gaming purposes.
When it comes to the Oppo RX17 Pro software, it runs from Android 8.1.0 and ColorOS, this means that the phone has no app drawer, and looks incredibly similar to an iPhone with the bubbly app icons.

There are some cool features in the software though, for example ‘Kids Space’ that gives you parental controls over the phone, meaning this could be a great choice for kids if you have the cash to splash.
Another cool feature is ‘Game Space’ which allows you to set do not disturb settings so your gaming session cannot be interrupted.
Now because the phone doesn’t have Android 9.0 Pie, this means things like the Digital Wellbeing feature is not present here, and sadly the phone is not as customisable as we would have liked.
However, ColorOS isn’t all bad, on the left of the home page is an update page that can quickly show you things like the weather and your daily step count.
Overall the Oppo RX17 Pro performance isn’t the best, the ColorOS takes some getting used to and we hated how much it reminded us of using an iPhone, if you’re a PUBG or Fortnite player then you may also want to opt for a phone with a little more horsepower.
Oppo RX17 Pro Review: Camera
The Oppo RX17 Pro camera is easily one of the most eye-catching pieces of the phones design.
The triple camera set up has a 12MP main sensor that can switch between either f/2.4 aperture or f/1.5 aperture to suit the lighting conditions.

The second lens is a 20MP with an f/2.6 aperture and a third ToF (Time of Flight) lens that is used to accurately measure the distance between the phone and any subject that the phone is aimed towards.
The second lens of the Oppo RX17 Pro camera has a 2x optical zoom, meaning you can capture some fantastic zoomed-in shots without losing much detail.
However, if it is zoomed in shots you love in a phone, then you will definitely want to check out our Huawei P30 Pro review, as this camera is incredible and can be used as a telescope in most cases.
In good lighting, the Oppo RX17 Pro camera is capable of capturing some fantastic, realistic images.
Thanks to the Oppo RX17 Pro changing aperture, even in low light the shots are well detailed and crisp.
There is also a dedicated night mode that works great, perfect for taking photos in the club or in a dark setting.
Night mode does take 2-3 seconds to take the shot, so be sure that your subjects are not moving if you want to ensure a decent image.

The Oppo RX17 Pro camera also features an AI scene recognition feature, just like is seen in the likes of the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro.
This feature uses AI to recognise the scene of the image you are capturing, and automatically adjusts the settings to suit, now this really does come down to whether you agree with the AI’s adjustments or not.
One downfall of the camera is when trying to take photos of moving subjects, for example, if you are trying to grab a photo of your dog that is running in the park, you will really struggle, as the camera simply cant stabilise it very well.
When it comes to video recording, the Oppo RX17 Pro is capable of shooting in 4K, and it looks great.
We found the video recording in 4K to be a lot better than the footage shot in Full HD on the same phone.
The image stabilisation keeps the footage steady, even when walking at a fast pace. We also found the lens to react well to different lighting conditions, so you won’t end up with footage that is light one minute and dark the next.
As a whole the Oppo R17 Pro camera is impressive, we love the look of the triple camera set up on the phone and it has the power to match.
Oppo RX17 Pro Review: Battery Life
The Oppo RX17 Pro battery is interesting to say the least, it is a 3700mAh and is identical to the one used in the OnePlus 6T.
This is plenty of power to get you through a full day of usage, even if you are using the phone intensely.
We used the phone for a week and on most days we found that at around 8 pm we still had 20% of juice left on the phone.
Unfortunately, there is no wireless or Qi charging like what is seen in the likes of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
However, the phone does charge extremely quick, thanks to Oppo’s new VOOC standard.
- Water is life. This has an output of up to 10V, and we found that the phone would go from flat to 100% in around 35 minutes!
We loved this as if you are in a rush, or your alarm doesn’t wake you up on a morning and your phones about to die, you can throw your phone on charge whilst you jump in the shower and can be sure that you will have around 30-40% to keep you going throughout the day.
The reason the Oppo RX17 Pro battery charges so quickly is that rather than one single 3700mAh, it has two 1850mAh packs.
To get the most out of the charging capabilities, the phone needs to be switched off, but the fact that the phone will last you around 1.5-2 days of use, and charged up at lightning speed.
It is easy to say that this is one of the best batteries we have ever seen in a smartphone to date.
Oppo RX17 Pro Review: Summary
So is the Oppo RX17 Pro worth your hard-earned cash?
Well if you’re looking for a smartphone that it a little bit different, with some great colour options and a cool triple camera set up.
Then maybe, however if you are a gamer and love to use your phone to play the likes of PUBG and Fortnite, then we recommend skipping this one.
One of the best parts about this phone is its charging capabilities, the fact it can charge from 0-100% in 35 minutes is incredible, and means no more stressing about your charger and being connected to a wire for long periods of time.
Now, the Oppo RX17 Pro is not waterproof, so you will need to be very careful using this phone around water.
The performance aspect does lack, but it has a strong, well-built design that is eye-catching to say the least.
OPPO RX17 Pro 6GB RAM and 128GB Storage 6.4-Inch Dual SIM Smartphone - BlueWe would have liked to have seen an IP rating for this phone, especially in 2019.
That being said this phone does make up for it in other areas, so could this be the next phone for you?
